Mclaren?

Post by kefln » Mon Feb 26, 2018 11:51 am

What are peoples thoughts on Mclaren?

1) Hideous colours - had to get that out of the way.

2) Renault engine should push them up towards the sharp end, but it has been a while since they were pushed at that level. Mistakes and blunders for the season ahead?

3) Alonso. How long will he hold on?

1) It's the worst livery I've ever seen
2) they will make plenty of mistakes and finish the season 5th
3) Hopefully longer than his left rear tyre did.

Anyone see Ted talking to Alonso? He jokingly asked if the tyre fell off the car in shock because its not used to the speed? :P

Is this a constructive forum or a biased one that takes pot shots at the declared enemy?

The question in my mind is have McLaren ditched Honda just as that engine seems to have solved the worst of its problems, or are their headaches in testing indicative that the struggles of the last three seasons were much more of McLaren's own making?

I don't think McLaren are necessarily in terrible trouble. They have had worse pre-season testing in the years around 2010-12 and still gone on to have a race-winning car. It feels like they should at least have a fair expectation of seeing Q3 more often than not, which is a step forward but not exactly as big a step as they'd like.

Their new livery is my current favourite. Last year's was a bit of a cop-out, nowhere near their proper papaya colour. I think Force India have made theirs a stronger pink too. If you're going to have something divisive, you may as well go for broke on it - much better than another white or red livery anyway.

McLaren have good cornering speed but will be hindered by a conservative approach by Renault. There are reasonble grounds to consider McLaren design philosophy partly responsible for recent Honda era issues when you look at the reliability and speed of the latest version sat in the cars of Red Bull 2. I also wonder what impact senior team designers might have had, given that they have one eye on the prize for next year.

You certainly can't blame Renault for the teething problems in testing today:
Ricciardo, 149 laps, leading the times.

Alonso, 47 laps, about 1.8 seconds off DR's pace.

Luckily both trying out the Hyper soft tyre so it's somewhat representative but it is just testing. No fuel loads or engine modes are known, but Mclaren do need to find reliability and rapidly.

When I said hindered by a conservative approach, I did have in mind all Renault powered cars. Making reference to a recent concern raised by Horner.
