I thought I'd start a discussion on this, as it seems an issue people are divided on!
I don't get it at all, it wouldn't have saved Jules Bianchi or Fillipe Massa, it seems like a gimmick that they're selling as a safety device. I'm struggling to find an accident or serious injury that this would have prevented in the last 30 years!
I'm all for safety, but this isn't the way forwards.
As I've said before, the best way to avoid a repeat of Jules Bianchi's crash is to ensure that all recovery vehicles have guards round them so that if an F1 car should hit it, the F1 car will not go underneath it. To be honest I feel that the reason F1 ignore this is because if they admit that is the solution, they could be open to further action, as you could argue negligence letting a JCB with at least 2 foot ground clearance trackside with cars where the drives sit at a similar height.
