Alonso vs Red Bull

Post by Snap Matt » Fri Aug 24, 2018 3:16 pm

Alonso has supposedly asked for an apology from Red Bull after they denied offering him a drive for 2019.

Marko has been quoted saying "We were negotiating with him in 2007 or 2008. His demands were very tedious back then."

Horner also said "We had an inquiry from Flavio Briatore and from Liberty Media but the position within Red Bull has always been very clear."

Personally, I think that the most likely explanation is that Briatore was a bit creative when telling Alonso what options he might have had for next year. That does mean taking Horner's words at face value, though, which feels a bit like treating a Donald Trump tweet as containing any truth.

It really would have made little sense for Red Bull to take on Alonso alongside Verstappen. If there has been tension in the team with Ricciardo there, that would have seemed like a walk in the park compared to a year with Max and Fernando in each other's face all the time.

I am not sure that represents much of a change in his behaviour.

There was an amusing take from Alonso this weekend saying that he is the only driver in F1 to have won anything so far this year since he won Le Mans - as the WDC has not been settled yet, nobody else has actually achieved anything this season.
